Get outside with your Big Dog!

Ah, it’s Fall again. Fall always inspires me to get outside and explore the world. It’s so easy to slip back into an exercise routine when the weather turns crisp. But guess who else wants to get out and frolic? Yes, the Big Dog. She loves this time of year and I can’t bear to leave her inside, with those big sad hound eyes, while I go off to mountain bike or some other activity she can’t do. And sometimes I just don’t want to walk the same old walk.

How about a new walk?! Geocaching seems a good activity for us both. It combines a walk in the outdoors with a little brain challenge for mom. Gets us out to new venues. And, maybe, teaches mom how to use the GPS so we can more safely explore even more new terrain (hmm, do you know about the helicopter “rescue”?)

Geocaching.com is a website to help you get started. It locates caches in your area with ratings on terrain and difficulty. It even has a “dog friendly” icon, so you know when it’s a good choice for the team : )
A GPS will cost a little to get started (so what doesn’t?) … looks like about $70 will get a serviceable entry model. Other than that, appropriate clothing, good shoes and some water should get you on your way. Remember water for the beastie!! Packs can be had so Big Dog can carry their own.
So have some fun on a techno-savvy treasure hunt with your Big Dog!

Shelter dog video

The Shelter Project is starting a tv campaign for shelter pets with ads that have an upbeat and humorous tone to them. They know homeless pets is a serious subject, but are recasting the issue and hoping to spark the public’s interest … “hey, it’s FUN to go to the shelter and adopt a pet!” This campaign is a joint effort of the ad council, the humane society, and maddie’s fund. Safe Travels – Car Harness

I absolutely love taking my Ruby on the road with me, but I must admit, I am nervous when she is in the car. My inner grandma takes over as I am oh-so-careful not to turn sharply or stop suddenly. I am always glaring at someone I feel is not taking my baby’s safety seriously enough.

The Auto Zip Line by Kurgo seems a good solution for car travel safety. With this harness system the dog still has the mobility to move around in the back seat and can comfortably lie down.

The safety belt works by having a nylon line attached between the two rear seatbelts or rear passenger side handles, creating a tether run. The dog wears a harness with a leash attached to it; this harness and leash can be used to get the dog easily in and out for walks. The leash freely slides along the tether line giving the dog mobility but still securing him in case of a sudden stop or change of direction. Brilliant! The harness can be used with a front or rear seat belt in a more traditional manner if necessary.

Big enough for big dogs, too. The large fits necks 18-30 inches, chests 24-34 inches. Extra large gets us up to necks 24-35 inches, chests 28-44 inches.

I just checked the measurements, and this will fit my Great Dane.
